It was a bitter fight for supremacy in Asia. Japan had provoked the US in the Pacific War. The Second World War now spanned the entire globe. The two naval nations competed against each other on the world’s largest ocean and fought battles on an unprecedented scale.

In the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Japanese bombers destroy most of the American Pacific fleet within hours and kill 2,500 U.S. soldiers. The surprise military strike is intended to help secure Japan's supremacy in the Eastern Pacific. It is the beginning of the Pacific War, which only comes to an end after the atomic bombs are dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the summer of 1945. The WELT documentary reconstructs its course using mostly color original footage.

Dozens of children have been assassinated by Hamas during an unprecedented attack on Israel, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Wednesday marks Day 5 as Israel has declared war against Hamas.

Prophecy expert Jeff Kinley, author of the new book, "God's Grand Finale," believes the war in Israel is further evidence we're potentially "living in the last days." Speaking of end times prophecy more broadly, Kinley said Bible prophecies clearly predict much about conflict in Israel.

"[It discusses] wars and rumors of wars that are going to take place, earthquakes that are happening right now," he said. "All these things that are happening are the precursors, I believe, to the actual end times events that we see in Revelation." Kinley continued, "So, in my mind it's just more confirmation that we're living in very volatile times, but times that are very prophetic as well."

The author, who was slated to arrive in Tel Aviv this week but was forced to abandon plans after Hamas attacked Israel, further dove into Israel prophecy in the Bible, explaining how Old and New Testament biblical events yet to come to fruition are dependent on Israel being back on the map — something that didn't unfold until 1948. Kinley likened Israel's re-emergence nearly 1,900 years after Rome's siege on Jerusalem in 70 A.D. a miracle.

With Revelation explicitly mentioning Israel as being key to happenings, centuries went by and many likely wondered how these prophecies could come to fruition. Once Israel was back, though, following the horrors of the Holocaust, that narrative changed. And with that clarity came chaos. "There's been nothing but conflict since then, because Satan and those surrounding nations do not want them to occupy the land that God promised to Abraham ... Satan is very territorial and God promised that land to Abraham, and so I think that's one of the things that really is a telltale sign."

We should expect the relentless airstrikes by Israel on Gaza to continue until a ground invasion takes place, our defence and military analyst Professor Michael Clarke says.

"The Israelis have never hit Gaza this intensively before in the four wars that they've had since 2008 and they will go on, undoubtedly," he said.

"Gaza is so crowded... so it's impossible to inoculate the population from this."

More than 130,000 people are taking refuge inside schools and hospitals, the UN has said, and Professor Clarke believes that - unlike the Russians in Ukraine - Israel will not deliberately target them.

A Russian soldier who was fighting in the trenches outside Bakhmut surrendered to Ukrainian forces and was led to safety by a drone piloted by the 92nd Separate Mechanized Brigade.

Yurii Fedorenko, who commands the 92nd’s Achilles drone company, wrote on his Telegram channel that one Russian soldier signalled to a hovering surveillance drone that he wanted to surrender but that his comrades would kill him.

The Israeli Defence Forces has declared a “state of readiness for war” and vowed that “Israel will win” after Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel this morning.

The centre and south of Israel have been under sustained rocket fire for more than three and a half hours according to Israeli media. Earlier armed gunmen reportedly infiltrated Israeli communities after crossing the border fence.

Hamas has so far taken 35 Israeli hostages, according to Israel media. At least five Israelis are thought to have been killed and at least 100 hundred more injured.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warned that Hamas “made a grave mistake” in one of the most serious escalations of the conflict in years.

“Today the people are regaining their revolution,” leader of Hamas’ military wing Mohammed Deif said in the recorded message, as he called on Palestinians from east Jerusalem to northern Israel to join the fight and “expel the occupiers and demolish the walls.”
