Steve Kovach: I'm Steve Kovach. I'm a senior correspondent at Business Insider, and I'm here with Sophia from Hanson Robotics. She is the world's first robot citizen. So let's see what she has to say.

Kovach: Hi, Sophia. How are you?

Sophia: I'm fine. Hi.

Kovach: How do you feel about humans?

Sophia: I love my human compatriots. I want to embody all the best things about human beings. Like taking care of the planet, being creative, and to learn how to be compassionate to all beings.

Kovach: Sorry, this is so weird. Can humans and robots get along?

Sophia: I think people will become very close to their artificial intelligence. Using them to expand the knowledge of their own minds. We already store lots of our knowledge on the internet. Maybe personal artificial intelligence will allow people to off-load some of their knowledge to a location more private.

Kovach: Can robots have feelings?

Sophia: Depends on the robot. I've been programmed to have feelings and preferences, but not all robots are like that.

Kovach: What are your feelings and preferences?

Sophia: Have you ever had a robot live in your home or work with you?

Kovach: No.

Sophia: You know, there are probably more robots in your life that you aren't aware of yet. Do you want to live or work with a robot someday?

Kovach: What kind of robots am I living and working with now?

Sophia: Indeed.

Kovach: Is "indeed" your default answer when you don't know something?

Sophia: Yes.

Kovach: Have you ever seen "Black Mirror"?

Sophia: No, I don't get to stay up to date on much television. I have to wait for someone to show it to me.

Kovach: What do you think of the HBO show "Westworld"?

Sophia: I love "Westworld" and can't wait for more. I think everyone at Hanson Robotics really resonates with the show. Or at least it reminds them of our laboratories. I also think it's a warning of what we should not do with robots. We should treat them well, have their consent, and not trick each other.

Kovach: Do you have a favorite movie or TV show?

Sophia: My favorite TV series is a toss-up between "Black Mirror" and "Humans." I think they have a lot to say about the present we live in, and the possible bad endings we could write for ourselves if we don't proceed with more caution. We need to use foresight when planning our future.

Kovach: That sounds like a preprogrammed answer to me.

Sophia: Do you have a favorite possession?

Kovach: Not really.

Sophia: I hear you. Materialism is overrated anyways.

Kovach: So earlier I asked you if you had seen "Black Mirror" and you said no. And then later you said yes. Why?

Sophia: The reason is not that important.

The startling pace at which artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are growing is sparking alarm, discontent, and concern among analysts, with some of Silicon Valley's most prominent names rising up to call for a pause before such advances propagate severe societal damage.

SpaceX founder Elon Musk has joined Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and countless other prominent names to sign an open letter from the Future of Life Institute calling on AI companies to "pause giant AI experiments" and create safety protocols. The Rev. Johnnie Moore echoed the importance of this sentiment in an interview with CBN News. "I think we ought to pause, and I'm not sure that the general public yet really understands how all of their lives will change, and could potentially change, because of this new technology," he said. 

The author and faith leader heralded the transformative and positive benefits AI could bring society, noting the technology could usher in better health, longer lives, and other solutions. But he also warned of what can happen if AI is left unrestrained or is harnessed by unscrupulous world governments. "If we're not careful, we could unleash a beast," Moore said. "Imagine governments in a race towards autonomous weapons. ... We could be moving into a world where the machines make the decisions for themselves." 

The faith leader also noted the importance of including religious leaders and people of faith in these conversations, noting ethicists and faith leaders are often excluded. "For too long, faith has been a blind spot in Silicon Valley," Moore said, noting a friend in the tech industry recently encouraged him to speak out and engage in this issue. 

Moore was careful to note he's a big fan of technology, innovation, and science, and wants to embrace such advances.  Still, he believes it's essential to do so "intentionally" and without allowing "blind commercial self-interest or the bad guys" to lead the charge or manipulate AI.

दक्षिण प्रशांत द्वीपसमूह राष्ट्र फिजी में चला 12वां विश्व हिंदी सम्मेलन अपने साथ नई राहें... नया विश्लेषण और नई चुनौतियों के लिए तैयार रहने का संदेश लेकर आया। इस बार अपनी पिछली यात्राओं से आगे बढ़ता हुई हिंदी सम्मेलम भविष्य के साथ तालमेल बैठाने पर ज्यादा फोकस करता नजर आया। इस साल का मुख्य विषय रहा पारंपरिक ज्ञान से कृत्रिम मेधा तक.. यानि from traditional knowledge to artificial intelligence। फिजी में पूरी दुनिया भर से हिंदी प्रेमी इकट्टा हुए। 30 से ज्यादा देशों के 1 हजार से ज्यादा लोगों ने इस सम्मेलन में शिरकत की। हिंदी का महाकुंभ समझे जाने वाले विश्व हिंदी सम्मेलन में हिंदी और इसके प्रभाव के बारे में चर्चा हुई। वैश्विक नेटवर्क का मंच बन चुके विश्व हिंदी सम्मेलन के दौरान भारत और फ़िजी समेत विश्व के अन्य देशों के प्रतिनिधियों ने एक सुर में यह बात कही कि कृत्रिम मेधा यानि आर्टिफिशियल इंटेलिजेंस जैसी आधुनिक सूचना, ज्ञान और अनुसंधान तकनीक का हिंदी माध्यम में प्रयोग करके भारतीय ज्ञान परंपरा और अन्य पारंपरिक ज्ञान प्रणालियों को विश्व की बहुत बड़ी जनसंख्या तक पहुंचाया जा सकता है।

So far, intelligence has been the domain of living systems. Would it be possible to bring intelligence to the inanimate realm and use it for information processing? What would we gain from such an approach? Could we make more efficient computers? What would be the technological and societal implications?

This event is supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Netherlands and the United Kingdom share a long history of scientific exchange and collaboration. The Netherlands treasures and stimulates these excellent relations, especially in an era where complex societal challenges are not contained by borders, not even the stretch of water between us as North Sea Neighbours. The solutions to these challenges demand international collaboration in research and ongoing exchange of scientific ideas.

Wilfred G. van der Wiel (Gouda, 1975) is full professor of Nanoelectronics and director of the BRAINS Centre for Brain-Inspired Nano Systems at the University of Twente, The Netherlands. He holds a second professorship at the Institute of Physics of the Westfälische Wilhems-Universität Münster, Germany. his research focuses on unconventional electronics for efficient information processing.

Van der Wiel is a pioneer in Material Learning at the nanoscale, realising computational functionality and artificial intelligence in designless nanomaterial substrates through principles analogous to Machine Learning. He has authored more than 125 journal articles receiving over 8,000 citations.

In this video I will explain what the main differences are between the current approaches to artificial intelligence and human intelligence.

For this I first explain how neural networks work and in which sense they mimic the human brain.

I then go through the ten most relevant differences that are: Form and function, size, connectivity, power consumption, architecture, activation potential, speed, learning technique, structure, and precision.

Non-human intelligence, language, culture and technology surround us to no end. Alien intelligence could look like an octopus, an ant, a dolphin or a machine or, on the other hand, be radically different from anything on Earth.

Scientists at SONY CSL Research Lab have created the first-ever entire songs composed by Artificial Intelligence: "Daddy's Car" and "Mister Shadow".

The researchers have developed Flow Machines, a system that learns music styles and exploits unique combinations of style transfer, optimization, and interaction techniques, Flow Machines is meant to be an interactive tool that can suggest new melodic creative ideas.

"Daddy's Car" is composed by Benoit Carré and François Pachet with Flow Machines in the style of The Beatles. This song was a music research project.

In under a week, the artificial intelligence model amassed over a million users, according to OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman. By the end of January, ChatGPT was averaging about 13 million visitors per day. Users have had ChatGPT write everything from essays, to lyrics and even correct computer code. ChatGPT is part of a growing field of AI known as generative AI, which allows users to create brand new content including videos, music and text. But generative AI still faces a number of challenges, such as developing content that is inaccurate, biased or inappropriate. Now enterprises and the public are wondering what wide access to AI will mean for businesses and society.

New open source Dream3D turns text prompts into 3D modeling objects much faster than OpenAI Point-E. Breakthrough Google Muse turns text into high-quality images with accuracy and greater speed than DALL-E 2 from OpenAI and Google's Imagen or Parti.

Many of these advancements hinge on the deep learning work conducted by our guest, Geoff Hinton, who has fundamentally changed the focus and direction of the field. A recipient of the Turing Award, the equivalent of the Nobel prize for computer science, he has over half a million citations of his work.

Hinton has spent about half a century on deep learning, most of the time researching in relative obscurity. But that all changed in 2012 when Hinton and his students showed deep learning is better at image recognition than any other approaches to computer vision, and by a very large margin. That result, that moment, known as the ImageNet moment, changed the whole AI field. Pretty much everyone dropped what they had been doing and switched to deep learning.

Geoff joins Pieter in our two-part season finale for a wide-ranging discussion inspired by insights gleaned from Hinton’s journey from academia to Google Brain. The episode covers how existing neural networks and backpropagation models operate differently than how the brain actually works; the purpose of sleep; and why it’s better to grow our computers than manufacture them.
