This week's guest is Mu Tunç, an independent film director and writer from Istanbul. Mu has two feature films which his first film Arada has been seen as one of the first punk films of Turkey and his second film became the first Turkish docu-feature that Netflix broadcasted worldwide. He travels the world as being start-up brand director of a variety of brands and collects a vast collection of punk, hardcore, and grindcore records through the years. His brother is a pioneer member of the first punk bands in Istanbul, so he has some of the first underground punk records in Turkey. For this particular set, he selected a variety of records from the late '70s to the mid-'90s.

You ever seen Ghostface use a shotgun?
Trust me this one’s not the same

Meet Cooper Ray the cyclist in this video and Terry Barentsen the camera man riding behind him.

Now you might think this was filmed as a once off, for some kind of stunt, movie or commercial, but in actual fact Terry is a freelance cinematographer based in New York, and often films Cooper, himself or various other people, riding around new York City for his Youtube channel.

What makes Cooper’s riding style even more amazing, is he does not have any gears or brakes on his bike.

When it comes to braking, I’ve seen Cooper jump off the bike and slow down on foot, also I have seen him use his foot on the back wheel like a brake, but otherwise he just keeps riding.

Also the bike Cooper is riding is a track bike made for racing at a velodrome, it is a fixed gear bike with no brakes and no freewheel. Which means the rear wheel drives the pedals, so as long as the bike is moving the pedals are turning.

To all those who think this form of riding is reckless and dangerous, I agree, but that does not change the fact people all over the world ride like this every day, Terry just wanted to say “everyone crashes from time to time, even with brakes, we believe staying focused and aware of your surroundings is the best way to stay safe and having no brakes forces you to be in the present. These videos aren't made to encourage bad cycling, so please ride at your own risk and skill level.

Another piece of nostalgia that I found laying around. Live performances from Cro-Mags, Leeway, Biohazard, and Type O Negative at Lamour, Brooklyn, NY in 1991. Old school NY Hardcore.

The Hitler Demo cut in 1981 after Heart Attack auditioned at CBGB and watched Bad Brains play in late February.

Formed in the suburban area of Whitestone, Queens, they were probably the youngest punk band in the NYC area at the time, according to some flyers and fanzines, as the first line up was formed by people from 12 to 16 years old. Their first demos (Hitler Demo and The Mojo Sessions) was heavily influenced by English punk rock, especially Sex Pistols and The Clash, with hilarious lyrics, but soon after attending a CBGB show of the Bad Brains, singer Jesse Malin and guitarist Jackie Flanagan decided to switch genres to the latest wave of punk, hardcore.

On 07/05/12, the day before Cro-Mags founder Harley Flanagan stabbed two current members of the Cro-Mags at an aborted show at Webster Hall in NYC, he was a special guest at the CBGB Festival film screening of "American Hardcore" at the Landmark Sunshine Cinemas.

In the summer of 2005, federal agents and police in Rockford, Illinois, captured over a thousand hours of surveillance footage inside a crack house. The gang smokes marijuana, plays with guns, and sells crack and heroin for six weeks, completely unaware that their every move is being recorded.

Customers come and go, unaware that their private lives are being revealed. This is an intimate portrait of a crack house's rise and fall, as well as a drug-addled American urban culture. Interviews with gang members, their friends, and police disclose the unavoidable tragedy - and the occasional dark humour - of a reality that exists underneath the surface of any major community.

当時YDLも普通に、NYハードコアのバンドと対バンしてましたね。Rest In Pieces、Side By Side、Altercation、Uprise、American Eagle、Warzoneなんかと一緒に載ってるフライヤー見たことあります。
Revelation のコンピ The way it isにも入ってたけど、Nauseaと一緒のコンピに入ったのが、お互いのシーンで物議を醸し出しましたね。当時トンプキンズスクエアで、Skinheadsとアナーコパンクの大乱闘事件があったのは有名。
主義主張は人それぞれだと思うから、その考察は皆さんにお任せするとして。

Legendary New York City Hardcore producers DOA were the first authentic speedcore artists. They helped define the NYC hardcore/ speedcore sound during the early 1990's. Formed in New York City in 1993, a year later, the trio began releasing material on Industrial Strength Records, including the "Industrial Power 9D4" single. After playing several shows in hardcore techno's then homebase of Scotland, the group's debut album, New York City Speedcore, was released thru ISR and Earache (UK) in 1997.

Ignoring any mask or social distancing rules, the first major show to hit NYC since early 2020 (featuring Madball, Bloodclot, Murphy's Law, and The Capturers) went down unopposed by NYC authorities. From the photos, the attendees had no visible fears of spitting and sweating all over each other despite the risk of infection with the plague. City officials claim the permit filed by Black and Blue Productions was inaccurate and misleading, citing the show which pulled a crowd up to 3000, was listed as a 911 benefit concert for only 100 attendees.

This is the full-length cult/guerrilla/no-budget (obv)/16mm/punk movie THREAT shot in the LES during the mid 90s in the final years these streets were known as Alphabet City before the gentrification boom that followed later in the decade.

*This is the version that was released theatrically in 2006 with some re-edits and alterations (note the voiceover comments on 9/11, which occurred well after filming). I'm also going to upload the original "touring version" that played in underground venues across the US & Europe in the late 90s.

The film was shot super low budget on 16mm film stock left over from local TV shoots and cameras borrowed from a film co-op after hours.

You can get the DVD (with soundtracks featuring Minor Threat vs Holocaust, Gorilla Biscuits vs Defrag, Youth of Today vs Edgey, Glassjaw vs Enduser, Killswitch Engage vs Edgey, Bleeding Through vs Hecate, Most Precious Blood vs Atari Teenage Riot, and many more) at Amazon or at Halo-8's website (http://www.halo8store.com).

There's more info on the film here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Threat_(film) but it only refers to the 2006 version, it needs to be updated with the full history. Threat was shot in the mid-90s contemporarily with Godmoney, Edge of Quarrel, Godass, and NYHC.
