With the World Cup soccer championship approaching, all eyes are on Brazil, but a fair number are simultaneously fixed on Nelly, an elephant living in Germany.<br /> <br />With the 2014 FIFA World Cup soccer championship approaching, all eyes are on Brazil, but a fair number are simultaneously fixed on Nelly, an elephant living in Germany. <br /><br />It appears she has quite a knack for predicting sports match winners.<br /><br />Nelly had her first big success in 2006 when she correctly forecasted many of the women’s FIFA World Cup outcomes. <br /><br />After that, she went on to call numerous match results in both the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Euro 2012. <br /><br />So far, her outlook for her adopted country has Germany in a tie with Portugal and but beating both the United States and Ghana to move out of the first round. <br /><br />Nelly’s process is pretty straightforward.<br /><br />She’s given a ball and the option of two goals, each of which has a team flag and country name assigned to it. <br /><br />Using her trunk, Nelly then puts the ball in the net of the one she feels will emerge as the victor. <br /><br />Her ascent into the ranks of renowned animal oracles doesn’t come without some sad news, however.<br /><br />Prior to her becoming the go-to predictor of soccer match winners and losers, that job belonged to an octopus named Paul. <br /><br />Sadly, Paul the Octopus passed away in the fall of 2010.
