Oral Sex transmits STI and may cause cancer! | UroChannel
Many people don't use condoms or other barrier methods when engaging in oral sex because they think, it is harmless. On the contrary, sexually transmitted infections (STI) may also be transmitted by oral-genital contact. Many STI's live on mucous membranes, so the mouth and throat form a perfect environment. This is true for Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, HPV, Herpes, Syphilis and others. Also recurrent yeast infections in the vaginal area are probably linked to oral sex, although candida is not an STI strictly speaking. The Human Papillomavirus (HPV), types 16 and 18 cause cervical cancer and are also responsible for 20-30% of cancers within the oral cavity. HPV also causes genital warts which not only can be found in genital areas but in the mouth and throat as well. Dr. Dr. Stefan Buntrock, urologist from Göttingen, explains on UroChannel the implications of oral sex when it comes to STI-infections.
